Personal journey ofdiscovery!

Women’s Travelship is a unique experiential education journey that takes participants on a 2-week long journey across Nepal’s plains, hills and mountains, to immerse in local cultures, learn about the local environment alongside facilitating a personal journey of discovery. Bringing together strangers from different age groups, backgrounds and cultures, the Travelship experience builds a community of travellers, who experience the world beyond their homes while also journeying inward for self discovery.

This is a two-week long immersive learning trip where a certain number of women are selected to explore Nepal’s plains, hills, and Himalayan landscapes. Open for all Nepalese women who identify themselves as women. Throughout this transformative journey, the participants get to not only immerse themselves in new cultural contexts but also transcending their comfort zones, engaging with local women in various homestays, and confronting personal biases.

The team aims to continue Travelship as a yearly programme and expand the opportunity to women across Nepal.

First Travelship (2022)

2022 was the start of our first women’s travelship, amidst a pool of 206 applicants, our selection process was both women-only and women-led, with the assistance of female travellers from Nepal. We explored the regions of Barauli, Bandipur and Mustang in 2 weeks. Our travelship ventured beyond conventional activities, by passing typical elephant rides often associated with Nepal’s plains. Instead, we fostered a deeper understanding of sustainable practices by visiting the StandUp4elephants sanctuary, where caregivers rescued elephants and imparted insights into eco-tourism. Moreover, our exploration extended to the remarkable Bon village, an indigenous community that offered our participants a profound encounter with divergent realities, eliciting poignant reflections and emotions.

Second Travelship (2023)

In 2023, Duluwa Outdoors brought together 7 participants aged 22-38 from diverse walks of life; entrepreneurs, engineers, artists, students. The participants were selected through a 3 step selection process: application form, group discussion and personal interviews. Upon final selection, all participants went through a series of training sessions including backpacking, travel photography and documentation, first-aid, and maintaining menstrual hygiene during travel. The team explored the landscapes of: Barauli, Bhujung and Manang.

Duluwa Diaries

In collaboration with Sattya Collective, we published an illustrated travelogue “Duluwa Diaries: A journey of sisterhood and adventure” in March 2024. Authored and designed by Women’s Travelship 2023 participant Krisha, the book unfolds a visual narrative of her remarkable journey, capturing the essence of exploration, cultural immersion, and personal growth.

The scholarships were sponsored by international grant provider Purposeful for 2022 and 2023.
